Redefining life without context to the people in it.
Her touch was still fresh in my mind. The sun was beating down whilst i walked carefully up the stairs, stopping at the slightest of sound, listening hard for any sound.
Smoothly I walk up to her door step and knock, whilst I look down from the window to the street for someone peculiar.
"So you came."
"I had to, you sounded low."
"That’s very sweet of you. Come in."
Her face was smudged; i knew she had been crying.
"So, father in law called, huh ?"
A smile lit her face up; just the way it should always be.
And then as if something deep inside snapped, a trickle of a tear escaped her eye. She turned to hide it from me. I moved closer to her, as her palm wiped the tears away. Her lips were half open, as she breathed heavily; with her eyes lowered and wet eye lashes, i cradled my hands around her face as she closed her eyes and suppressed her tears. Her black hair, fell from her forehead to her cheek, and then a tear rolled down along her nose, my finger reached for the tear and swept it, way up, clearing her face. She hiccuped, and then glued her eyes to the floor, slowly bringing her close, I hugged her.
Bringing my mouth near to her ear, I spoke,
“You are a good person, but the world isn’t, i am sorry that things turned out the way they did, but i am here and here for as long as you want. Don’t worry, we’ll get through it.”
"Thanks" she said as her face pushed against my chest, and her smile recuperated.
"By the way, when is your mom coming?"
There was the sound of footsteps on the staircase, outside.
"Now, it seems." she said and broke into a hysterical laugh. Half striving to think what to do, and half to revel at the irony; she whispered in my ear.
"Stand by that door, when mom enters from this door, i will signal you"
"Signal me how?"
"I’ll say do you want to watch that movie we were watching last night, mom?!!"
”..Okay!” I staggered through the rooms and reached for the other front door; gleaming and freakishly scared.
"I heard some one’s voice." A male voice came through and suddenly there was a whale stuck in my throat, I couldn’t swallow.
"I was watching TV."
‘“here is he?!” As the tone of his voice rose, so did the rate of perspiration for me.
"Get out the way!" And suddenly my knees wouldn’t move, they were stuck, frozen, cut off… I felt like a lamb to a tiger, and I waited my atrocious flaying at the hands of a giant.
Adrenaline pushed through my veins as I heard closely for the approaching footsteps, but the only thing I heard was the pounding of my heart. To me it seemed the thumping was louder than the sound of his footsteps; and then i heard the blessed words.
"Now, do you believe me?"
"Yeah, i guess, it might have been the neighbors downstairs."
"You had to stand here to check?"
"So would you like to watch the movie i was watching last night with mom?"
"Yeah, i guess so."
And then i ran for my life!
And not for one moment did i look back to check. I just ran and ran and then drove as fast as i could until i was home.
The phone rings; it was her.
"Boyfriend’s gone; So, would you like come over?”
